Spotlight: Line Drawings

By Kate Riley September 12, 2019

I’ve been a fan of line art for a few years, and I framed a simple line art print for the wall in this bathroom remodel.

Line art or line drawings are images created with free flowing curved lines against a plain background that represent two or three dimensional objects without gradations in shade or hue. Line art is usually monochromatic. It emphasizes form and outline, over color and shading, and tends towards realism, but it may also be a caricature or cartoonish.

I’ve taken a few art classes at my local junior college, but never officially trained as an artist. But I really love making art! I’m much more comfortable creating art digitally, and I wanted to experiment with making line art, so I scanned my own cyanotype artwork and traced the image with tools in Adobe Illustrator.

I cleaned up the edges in Photoshop with the Brush tools and gave it an off white background.

Here’s how my line art looks in a frame, not bad for a first try!

If you’re interested in adding some line art to your home, I’d encourage you to pick up a really nice black pen and just start sketching! Of if you’d like to purchase a simple line drawing, check out these shops on Etsy that offer a variety of subjects.
