Penny Lover

By Kate Riley May 30, 2019

I was tile shopping for a client for her breakfast nook, she’ll have white cabinets below and wood floating shelves above and I recommended this tile as a lovely backdrop to her artwork, glassware, vases, etc.

I have never installed penny tile on a project before but I’ve always loved it so this is my opportunity! Although small in size, penny tile installations are soothing, not busy, because of the simplicity and repetition of shape. Have you ever run your hands across penny tile? Don’t you love that feeling?

Penny tile is a timeless look, it’s a no fail choice for backsplashes and bathrooms. Much fun can be had in floor installations with countless patterns that can be created with it. I’ve rounded up some lovely penny tile installations below, I love the colorful versions with white grout, the dramatic with dark grout, and the creativity you can unleash with intricate patterns.

  1. I like the look of penny tile, however I can almost always see (even in what are obviously high-end installations) the edges of the sheets of tile.

For example, the Martha Peterson image above.

It’s for this reason that I’ve never used it.
