Rustic + Refined Dining Room

By Kate Riley August 12, 2013

A few months ago I was approached by World Market to partner on a room makeover – they inquired if I would take their products and completely redo a space top to bottom. Um * ahem * “Yes!” I replied being a fan of their store for over a decade. I had the perfect candidates in mind – a very deserving family.

My friends Cheryl and Jay are teachers and they’ve spent many years teaching in the local school system. They bought a house last year with a formal dining room and have wanted to entertain friends and family but didn’t have the time or budget to pull a space together. CG and World Market to the rescue!

The plan was to introduce contrast, color, pattern, and warmth to the room by mixing classic elements with rustic finishes. I used the window panels as the jumping off point for the entire space, pairing grays, plums, and yellows with warm metallic sheens.

The plan included a rustic dining table and mixed seating (I love those hourglass gold tables used as stools!), various wood finishes, a layered plum palette, and a casual table setting.

Here’s what the dining room looked like two months ago when I started:

Here is the dining room totally transformed!

We added the tongue and groove wall treatment in July and I painted above it a contrasting charcoal gray with a hint of taupe (Glidden’s ‘Arrowwood’) pulling the paint color from the fabric in the window panels.  Favorite elements?  Where to begin… let’s start with the fabulous sideboard.

I absolutely love this Everett table and its weathered finish – it’s a great bargain for such a statement piece at $255. The table is skinny and long and oh so perfect for adding style and storage in a dining space. Use it as a place to set dishes or beverages or simply to create a happy vignette.

One of the newest additions to the World Market collection is this golden Taj wine rack with a trellis motif – it would make a wonderful housewarming or holiday gift!

On the table, cheerful yellow painterly plates are mixed together in a casual setting with various wood tones that include the faceted silverware and bead chargers. The hints of yellow and plum in the Ikat window panels inspired the palette. The purple botanicals and olive branches are just clippings from the yard.

The one piece that these owners wanted to stay in the space was the family’s chest inherited from a beloved uncle. I love its rich detail and the significance to the couple so it was included in the dining room space design. The piece will be used to store linens and other dining room accessories when not in use.

Above we added a meaningful trio of pictures. This family vacations every year in Yosemite National Park so inside of the three frames are images of the Park in different seasons.

The new light fixture is a tone on tone gray chandelier hung 30 inches above the table for ambiance – it plays a background role given all the patterns and accessories in the room.

  10. Great job! I’m curious if you think the Greyson chairs will be difficult to reupholster if the fabric gets dirty. I love the look, but it looks like the studs might make it challenging. Thoughts?

    • I would slipcover them before reupholstering them Ruthie, just my thought!

  26. STUNNING. I was showing my husband the before and afters and he couldn’t believe it either… the purples, grays and golds are just incredible together. Perfect, Kate. :)

  27. Kate,
My favorite color is purple, plum almost all along those lines and I find it so hard sometimes to decorate with those colors without it looking either too feminine, dark or little girly. You have created a space I want to copy down to the last detail. It is gorgeous and the perfect balance. I am redoing my bedroom and dining room & am going to use this as one of my inspirations! Thanks!

  28. Lovely Kate! I was at World Market two weeks ago, found great bargains and friendly, helpful people. Thanks World Market!

  29. Could you share the name of the program/app used to do the mock up image? I’d really love to know. Thanks. Beautiful work!

    • Hi Kasey, I use Photoshop Elements to layer everything on top of each other in the “the plan” image.

  30. Wow! What an unexpected color palette! The room came together beautifully, and the chest of drawers that the family owned prior to the remake is perfect with everything.
    Great work!

  31. I want this room! Gorgeous. Purple is my least favorite color, but the way you used the plum has me changing my mind. I love how you incorporated the metallics into a rustic space. Love your work. I follow you on Pinterest.

  32. So lovely! I’m heading over to World Market right now!! It’s within walking distance too…..so I am planning to make a detour on my evening walk….

  33. Gorgeous – as always! I love the color combos and all of the accent pieces, especially that wine rack!

  34. What a beautiful room…..your teacher friends will make lots of happy memories there! I enjoy your blog. Thanks,

  36. I love that room! Do you know the approx dimensions of the room? It is so pretty!

  37. WHAT and AMAZING Difference!!! WOW! I’m not a fan of plum or purple… but…. now I’m re-thinking it!!! :D Great job!! (crossing my fingers that I will be blessed with a room make-over!!)

  38. Gorgeous – never would have thought to put those colros together and it works fabulously!

  39. Hi Kate! I was just wondering if you would be able to tell me the height of the bead board in the room? I am currently adding bead board to my dining room and am having a hard time deciding on the height. Thanks so much!

  40. I love you work Kate! We are planning on completely redoing the Great Room (Family Room/ Dining Room area) We had a West Indies look for years, and we sold everything. We now have a huge room that we can play soccer in!!!! But I want to redo it all with a whole new look and style! I love World Market and plan to get the majority of items to redecorate from them. Thank you for your inspiration! We just saw the sweepstakes and signed up for it!!! I’ll try my best not to go out and buy things yet … waiting now to see if that Sweepstakes comes through!!!! I hope you are the one that shows up at our door!!!!

  41. What a beautiful transformation. Can you please tell me where I can find the aqua bottles on the bottom shelf of the console table? Thank you so much.
