Summer Breezes in the Guest Room

By Kate Riley July 10, 2017

I have a guest room upstairs that everyone fights over this time of year since it’s the one room that has retractable door screens to allow the fresh air in. In summertime, it’s the best spot to get a good night’s sleep, so I find myself sleeping in there as much as possible!

I’ve had the same indigo floral print duvet and shams in there for years and they’ve taken on a worn blue hue that I love. The batik pillow is from One Affirmation on Etsy, the blue and white fabric is Nate Berkus’ caspian fabric.

The gold and white sconce is new, it’s from Urban Outfitters and replaced a lamp that was taking up surface space on the small side table. I found an inexpensive lantern fixture at Lowes, I loved its shape and scale but not its finish so I spray painted it with Krylon’s ‘Gold Leaf’ paint.

This room has a set of French doors that look out to the rear yard and our small vineyard. You may recall the billy bookcase project I wrote about years ago, the set flanks the French doors and provide so much storage. The curtain fabric is my own shibori print available at Spoonflower.

The new retractable door screens keep the bugs out and let the fresh air in, perfect for warm summer nights! I can’t say enough about how wonderful it is to have these retractable door screens, they make the room so very pleasant to be in April through October, I love them!

Their design is so good! They disappear out of sight with easy to use latches (no clanking doors!) which allows for a full view. I encourage you to consider similar doors in your own home, they’re really wonderful! I also have a retractable door screen on kitchen door to my courtyard and it’s a lifesaver in summer when I want cool breezes but no bugs.

The cozy bedding, the abundance of books, and the retractable screen doors make this one space that I look forward to relaxing and sleeping in whenever I get the chance.

  1. I have been eyeing some nice retractable screen doors for a while now! How hidden are these? We have outward swinging french doors in our dining area, so we would have to have these installed on the interior side of the frame. Since we would really only use the screen doors in spring/summer, I’m worried about seeing handles or a lot of framing awkwardly on either side of the french doors. Hopefully that makes sense. I would love some insight!

    • Hi Andy, mine have a white linear frame that’s about 2.5 inches wide and the screen totally retracts inside. Note the installers will also install a base slider piece at the threshold where the retractable screen slides in and out. See the site for all the installation FAQs :)

  2. This is so funny, Kate. I’m in Australia now, where we all just leave our doors fully open in summer — no screens! My Canadian friends and family are a bit horrified when they visit! And I was, too, when we first immigrated. But now it’s just whatever: doors open, a few bugs, no big deal. I’m sure you remember this from your travels down under!!! That’s why we have so many French doors and bi-fold doors that open our houses up to outdoor patio rooms. ?????

    • I remember!!! When I camped at my cousin’s house it was the same thing, doors open and fans on!

  3. I can see why your guest room is in demand! It looks perfectly serene and sleeping with the doors open would be a treat.

  4. I agree with you, retractable door screens are perfect for summer. I think they are a must. I like the lantern and the golden paint you used. This room is really well decorated, congratulations!

  5. The billy hack is one of my favs! Are you able to lock the retractable screens?

  6. Oh I really need to get retractable screens for our bedroom. I am in Australia, but at night I can’t sleep without screens on the windows as we always end up with a stray mosquito or ten and I’m the one they always seem attracted to. Our last bedroom had wind out windows that we could open year round, but our new bedroom has inward opening French doors and I thoroughly miss having the fresh breeze at night (we do have a fan but not quite the same). The doors open onto a balcony so there is no room for screen doors – retractable screens are definitely the solution to our dilemma!

  7. Beautiful room. Love the ceiling light sprayed that colour. Just a note though – I love the bedside sconce as well, but the link doesn’t work for me. Is there a break or is it just me?

  8. The bedding is beautiful could you share where you bought the duvet cover from.

    Thank you.

  9. Love that room, the doors, the balcony, the view, everything! It’s beautiful! One question—do you usually add a small side chair to the room? I have always enjoyed somewhere to sit to read or put on my shoes, etc.in a bedroom. RH has small, cane-seated ones that are very light weight and useful as an extra chair at our kitchen table when all the grands visit us so that’s what I have in our guest room. :)
