This past Monday evening, I was honored to attend a very cool event in New York City sponsored by Lowe’s, showcasing their line of Hi-Def paints in Valspar’s signature colors.
The evening’s event began in this very cool downtown modern all white loft space brightened with splashes of Valspar paint samples all over the walls.
We were invited to mix and mingle with the other 30 bloggers invited, and greeting us were new quarts of fresh paint and paintbrushes for the upcoming challenges. To me, paint always represents new beginnings and the ability to reveal hidden potential in just about anything.
The always inspirational Nate Berkus was our host, together with Lowe’s. He spoke about the power of color, and how paint is simply the easiest way for anyone to transform their space into one they will love (so true!).
Nate spoke about the fact that whenever he seeks color inspiration, he turns to three sources: nature, fashion, and the exotic places he’s traveled. I love that. Color inspiration is everywhere, if we open our eyes to witness it, study it, and use that inspiration in our own homes.
Nate took a minute to chat, and snap a pic with me and blog buddy Melissa.
Working with Valspar paints was great fun ~ give me a gallon of colorful paint and I’m a happy girl! I’m a fan of Valspar having recently used this paint in my little boy’s room, and their Hi-Def is one of the few brands that covers in one coat.
Melissa and I played along in one of the Lowe’s challenges, but we started early. We were given 30 minutes to use the Valspar paints to turn a piece into something cool, so I opted for a two color chevron pattern. While the others nibbled on the crudité, we sneaked over to the challenge and started on the first coat of paint!
I painted the top and the door first, waited for it to dry, then taped the top off with painter’s tape and used a tip from this article for painting perfect stripes to get that exact chevron pattern on top by painting over the tape with the first color. It worked!
Due to the time crunch, I didn’t think about painting the hinges, (duh) but both Melissa and Nate agreed the hinges definitely needed to be painted, so to save face, I had to go back and paint them *hanging head in shame* The little cabinet turned out a little more funky than planned but at least I got that pattern straight! Nate played judge and we won the ‘Creative Use of Color’ challenge!

Today’s my wedding anniversary so I’m feeling lucky! Anyway, I’d use my Lowe’s gift card on some landscaping materials. It’s that time of year again, and I’m feeling the urge to develop a green thumb.

We just put a new deck on our house and it could use some sprucing up – furniture, planters, maybe an outdoor rug… I’d put the $250 to good use!
The military is sending our family to Turkey in August. We can not sell our house because of the market so we are renting it out. We are going to be painting our interior over the next month. I would use this gift card to pay for all of the supplies. I am keeping my fingers crossed!!
If I had a Lowe’s gift card I would re-paint my kitchen (with Valspar paints, of course) and then look for some new lighting to go with the newly painted kitchen. If there was any left over I would buy a few hanging baskets and some herbs………….LOVE your blog!

Recently scored some great finds at a garage sale. An awesome bench for my foyer $5, two wood chairs for my dinning room $1 each, and a new sewing table for my craft room for $10! I’m currently working a beautiful old hutch for my craft room, to store my sewing material. So as you can see…I have lots of projects to do and I’d use the $250 to help me sand, prime, paint etc…..

What a fun day, thanks for sharing! If I won, I’d use it to spruce up our outdoor patio, and buy some paint to redo some of the fixtures in our home. We constantly have a buzillion projects going on at any one time, so it’d be gone before I knew it!

Wow, there is so much I want to do! I would love to use cabinet transformations on my bathroom early 90’s cabinets, get a new fence for my yard, and hardwood flooring, to name a few.

Ah this would help me out SO much right now! I’m moving to a new apartment in 2 weeks and have all of, oh, $50 in discretionary funds for paint/supplies/decorations. $250 from Lowes would be a godsend!
Just yesterday, I told my husband that we need to spend more time in our backyard this summer (even though we’re in Texas and it will be 1,000 degrees!) :) I would use it to buy paint and cushions (if I don’t make them first) for our hand-me-down patio furniture. Maybe a shepherd’s hook or two as well.
Well, since I can’t buy Nate Berkus at Lowe’s, I guess I’ll have to “settle” for new faucets for our master bathroom! Ugly brass be-gone!

Right now, since summer is in the air, I’d spend it all on outdoor stuff: new planters and plants, lighting for the deck, and some new patio furniture!
I would use it to paint my downstairs. For the past 4 years I have lived with the awful builders beige(I think that it looks more peach) because I am lazy and because my husband is terrified of color. Last week he finally gave me the go ahead to paint(after tons of complaining from me).
I would use the gift card to buy insulation for our basement. This past year’s chilly New England winter was tough, but we just didn’t have the extra funds to upgrade the old (1930s???) insulation. Keeping my fingers crossed for a warmer winter next year!
The question is, what would I NOT do with $250? We just bought a new couch and love seat for a previously undecorated area of our house. We need paint, new trim for the front door, lamps, and wall art for that room. Buying the sofas opened up a ton of new projects for us.
I am getting the painting bug myself so the gift card would go for some new color for my family room.

Oooh…I could definitely use some climbing roses & other plants for my back yard. And…there are definitely some great spray paint colors that aren’t in my garage….could use some of those too…have lots of projects to finish since it’s now spring in NY!!!

I would use the $250 to finish the makeover that we have currently going in our master. We have currently finished out headboard. Next on the list is the painted sheer curtains, painted walls and reupholster chairs, build an accent table and ottoman for the newly reupholster chairs. Many even get started the master bath?

We are renovating a house in a rough neighborhood to do our ministry – and since we’re on a ministry budget, we dont have a lot of money for any fun extras (or even all the essentials) so i’d love to be able to get some faucets for our clawfoot bathtub or something :-) plus there’s like a million other things we still need so it would be perfect!

i’ve had my eye on a light fixture there for our bedroom, so i’d get that and then some planters with the left over to spruce up my back yard.
We’re re-doing an 1850s New England farmhouse and have so many projects in process! We’d use this toward a fence for the yard or for new bathroom fixtures.
I just ADORE Lowes! We’re renters, but FULLY believe in putting money into our rental to make it our home for as long as we stay – but parting with that money knowing that we won’t get full value out of our upgrades is difficult. A gift card to Lowes would be HUGE!!! We’d probably use it to buy paint and personalize our space. OR I’m thinking about building a bed for my little girl – so lumber would be a great option too! I know exactly what I’d do with the $250 card: give it to my brother and sister-in-law. They have had a really rough year and have been struggling to pay some major healthcare bills while working much less hours due to health reasons. If I won your card, I’d give it to my daughter for her room that we started but ran out of bucks to finish. We planned a bead board wall but instead ended up with just paint. Which is cool, but painted bead board…sigh! The texture alone is sigh worthy. So, it’s a work in progress as we plan around our funding. We’re looking at becoming empty-nesters and to sell this big house, we have to cover up all the creative painting we’ve enjoyed for the last ten years (my sister is a very cool artist who personalized the house for us). We just bought a fabulous new home, & a $250 GC to Lowe’s would sure come in handy….My first project is converting a closet into a mudroom. We also want to replace the carpet in the dining room & tile in the foyer with hardwoods…so yeah, I could SO use a $250 GC :)

I would buy paint for my laundry room. We have lived in our home for 11 years now and it is STILL the same “Dover white” it was when we moved in. Need a boost in there to make laundry more entertaining.
Wow $250 would go so far in my house and I agree with Nate a fresh coat of paint changes everything. My oldest has just moved out and quickly before my husband can take over the space as his second office I have to get that room re-done into a nice guest room. I’d use it to replace the sagging, splitting, SAD-looking wooden privacy fence. My yard is chain link on 3 sides, then wood on the side that is next to the road. I want chain link all around…more durable and a more cohesive look. Most important, it’ll be more secure for when my parents bring their dogs!
Of course I would love to win this! We are renovating an odd attic space to turn our 2 bedroom house into a 3 bedroom which will better fit our family of 5! This would be the perfect way to pay for the rest of that.

AHHH!! This would be SO AWESOME! I just got married so now that the bank is starting to fill back up with money, we are tackling painting our entire house. It is covered in UGLY builder’s grade tan paint.. all of it.. every SINGLE room. It is quite depressing!

Wow….I’ve just started to become a DIYer! I never knew the fun I could have turning old things into new things! Right now my biggest project is turning my daughter’s nursery into a big girl room. Hurray for Lowes! We literally just spent a whole bunch of money there last night for our bathroom – and we still need to go back and get the rest of the bathroom set (the medicine cabinet and mirror…). So that’s what it would be going to! That or new lights for the bathroom. Or to fix the bathroom fan. Or for paint for the master bedroom. Or for paint for my kitchen cabinets. Or new hardware for the kitchen cabinets. Yes, my list for Lowes is never-ending.

then I’d use the other money for hardware for a $20 chest of drawers i got at a yard sale that houses my tv! and then i’d buy some spray paint because I am not thrilled with the color i painted it and redo it :)
then i’d buy some other spray paint in say emerald green? and then buy laquer and paint 2 chest of drawers from ikea the infamous rast drawers!!
and i would also buy hardware to hang drapers and buy some of the waverly chippendale fabric drapes they have at lowes now to make a faux roman shade!!

I seriously love Valspar paint, I do not paint with anything else. A few times I have bought Behr because Home Depot is closer, I always regret it and end up driving to Lowes to get a new can. I am currently doing a big renovation on my house and to save money my husband and I decided we would paint ourselves, so I would use the $250 gift card to buy a boatload of Valspar paint (we have added about 1,000 sq feet to our house and it all needs to be painted- ceiling, trim, etc.). Whether or not I win we will still be buying Valspar paint, I can not recommend it enough.

We’re turning our game room into my office/studio so this would be AWESOME! I have a huge countertop from the Habitat for Humanity Restore in the garage that needs a base, and I could build a great one with $250!
When we moved into our new house, the ceilings in all the rooms were painted the same color as the walls. We have one room left…the purple room. And its not a nice purple, either.
I know exactly what to do with the $250 Lowe’s card if I win (I hope I do!). Nothing glamorous but something necessary: a dehumidifier! Our dehumidifier just busted and with the humid summer about to start, we definitely need a new one in our basement.
So many things are on our to-do list that this could be used for. Probably top priority is that it’d go towards a new metal roof for the addition on our house.

Pick anything off the list!……window boxes and flowers for the front of the house, new paint for all my exterior doors (they’re currently a horrid shade of green from the previous owner), Homemade tufted headboard for the guest room (thanks for the inspiration!), build a mantel around the fireplace, we currently have only a shower pan in the master bath (and no walls)…….and I have about a hundred more things after that!!

We have a lot of home improvement projects we are working on at the time: extending the patio, using Valspar paint to paint our enclosed patio ceiling, and painting an old bench we found at an antique store. Now if we could just buy time to get our to-do list done.
We are renovating our apartment, re-doing the kitchen and bathroom, so I would definately use the gift card towards that :)

Oh I can think of about a million and one ideas to use that gift card on! I would start by looking in their lighting department for some barn/industrial looking lighting for my master bedroom makeover, which is currently in full swing. Then I would head on over to the trim department and look and see if they have any beadboard for our master bathroom, which is next on the list. If there was anything left over I would just have to browse the paint department (I can sit there and stare at paint colors for hours!) and see if I could find that rustoleum cabinet makeover kits for the bathroom as well. Paint! We’re renters, but we have one HIDEOUS peach and purple bathroom (yikes!) which I’m trying to get our landlord to agree to let us paint and do a mini reno on.
Some high-quality products like a Valspar paint in a luxuriously muted tone might be just the thing to sway him. If I win, expect my before and after photos!
I can see why you didn’t paint the hinges – they needed something… else? Painting them the colors they are up against is a good way to camouflage them, but I could see something darker, or a metallic silver finish bringing more pizzazz to your funky piece.

Now that winter has finally left NC, I would get moving on a few painting projects that are on my to-do list: A beautiful desk that my husband made out of a 90-year old farm-house door, an old mahogany dresser that I saved from a thrift store, a 2-foot tall lamp from the 60’s that is kitschy and fabulous….the list goes on!

Buy some of their wonderful paint to start. Due to the economy, we had to sell our large family home and bought a small and very dated home. Our goal is to show our kids what you can do with lots of TLC and diy projects!!! Oh what I would do for this gift card! With 2 little boys on the move, it seems everyday we find something else that they’ve broken. Just last night one of them broke a door handle. So that would be first on my list, followed closely by new paint for my kitchen cabinets and a new front door – well at least it would take a small chunk out of that expense!
I would so redo my foyer and up my stairs. The previous owner of my house painted it an awful, very “80s” mauve color…but she didn’t stop there! Oh no…she took a spounge and painted plops of marroon and a light mauve color all over it. Not only is in completely dated, not classic and just down right ugly…it also makes my foyer very dark and dull. So I would certainly get that fixed up. I have lived with it for 6 years now *hanging head in shame* but time and money constraints have made sure the 80’s stay alive for a while longer in my house!

Hmm, I have soooo many unfinished projects in my house. The majority of them stalled after the adoption of our last child. Okay, I would finish the upstairs bath that was started 6 years ago then I would move on the the foyer which needs to be gutted and finished with new insulation and drywall and the back entry which also needs to be gutted, insulation and finished with a pantry. Okay now my head hurts :)
Oh, the places this could be used in our house! Plantation shutters, new ceiling fans, new kitchen faucet, base cabinets to build island for the kitchen, shade plants for the backyard, new hardware for kitchen cabinets, new kitchen appliances — the list is endless! Oh and our lawnmower decided to break a few days ago and if hubby can’t fix it guess we’d have to use the gift card for that!

We just built a house, so I have bare walls everywhere! I would use the $250 to fund some cool projects to help cover the bareness! Another possibility would be to repurpose some furniture to use in our nursery. #7 was a bit unexpected, so it’s back to the drawing board for all things baby!

We care currently in the process of selling our house. The house we had planned to buy was sold to another purchaser. This leads up to my answer of “Im not sure what I’d do with a Lowes gift card.” most of the new & relatively new homes we like don’t seem to have tile backsplashes. So that would be my 1st choice- If we end up buying a previously owned home, I’d likely use it to buy paint. We ‘ve seen a number of nice houses with awful ( in my humble opinion) paint choices. So far I have seen 3 homes with “flower gardens ” either steciled or painted free hand on lilac walls in 1 of the kid’s rooms. I guess this could be cute if I had a little girl, but I have sons . Sons-Who keep sayng ” No, Let’s not buy that house. It has icky girly flowers on the wall!” I keep saying it’d only take some paint & yes, selling the current home….

If I had $250 to lowes I would buy paint to repaint the main floor of our home, maybe add some shelving to a few spaces, a new door to the garage — a screen one so I can leave it open and see the kids, but keep the bugs out! I have a million things I could use it on.

I would update my patio! Currently we have a rickety table and four plastic chairs and a plastic “armoire” for storage. My whole 1st floor is “builder beige” and needs COLOR! The guest 1/2 bath also needs a total new look (beadbord or board & batten & new paint, build new vanity, tile floor). Kitchen cabinets need to change to white from standard builder grade oak. $250 would go a long way to making any of these happen!

Wow! When doing updates on my own home I’m always torn between “practical” and “pretty! With $250 to spend I could do both! I’d buy a new toilet to replace my water hog from 1968!! Oh what wouldn’t I do?!? First I would buy an adorable fan for our little girl’s nursery. Then I would use the rest to help defer the enormous costs of completely remodeling our backyard so that it loses it’s swamp beast look. If I won the $250 gift card, first I would redo my dining table since its looks like a picnic table by retaining it, tiling the top so I don’t have to use a table cloth(i dislike them) and then would add cushion and fabric to the top of the benches. Next I have to end tables that I’ve found at odds and end places and would strip them, and end up painting them a gray or violet color with an elegant pattern on them. Then I would uses matching hardware to make them look like they belong together so my husband and I would have nightstands for out bedroom. Since currently our bed is only on rails I would then make a fabric headboard and make it extremely long in order to add height to our room. I’m still looking for a dresser to redo but eventually when i’ve found the perfect one that would be redone as well. After the necessities were finished, I’d like to father material to build my son a little school desk so, he has a place to do little activities when he is down stairs and we are cooking and need to be able to see him.

Well, I have an order of paint samples on its way to me right now – through 5/16, Lowe’s paint samples are buy one get one free, and they ship free! – so I’d pick the paints for our new house (kitchen, living room, dining room, master…doin’ it all!) and get going!

I would repaint the master bedroom, paint the bookshelves in the dining room, and do several pieces in the mirrored finish look (like the desk you linked to several months ago) AND I want to experiment with the colors of gray and gray chalk paint. I would like to paint my kitchen cabinets and refinish the formica counter top with the Rustoleum counter kit! I have several pieces that need paint. I would share all of the pics with you since you are the inspiration that has started my desire to freshen up on a budget :)
IF I were to win the $250 – I would be able to finish making the bed of my dreams! I’ve already managed a headboard from old closet doors – I just need some “$$” to finish building a platform for the bed and headboard to attach it to. You know, one of those ‘fancy’ looking beds with maybe storage underneath. Oh yeah – I want it all! :D

We haven’t done anything to the boring walls since we moved into this house 3 years ago. So, my whole house is in need of a new fresh coat of paint and the $250 gift card will come in handy!! Any leftover $ will be used to update the bathroom fixtures. :)
I am moving into a new apartment in a few weeks! I have lots of DIY projects planned to make the place look nice. And, I’m a very broke college student, so any amount of many would be super helpful!
My husband and I just purchased our first real home and this gift card would definitely come in handy!! The entire interior needs to be repainted and it needs all new flooring and lighting as well!!! Of course, since we are DIYers we will be tackling all of the projects ourselves with supplies from Lowe’s and inspiration from Centsational Girl :)

I would paint, paint, paint! We have a new construction house that we have had to wait a year before we could paint (for warranty/touch-up reasons). Now that the time is up, I’m ready for some color! Bring on the Valspar!

My oh my! $250 gift card! I am in the process of renovating my bedroom…and I mean, drywall on the ceiling, cedar siding on the walls, a new closet and shelving. So I would use it on the crisp white paint for my walls, a pendant lighting hardware, paint for my night stands and lamps, and the gorgeous crystal knobs to finish off my fathers dresser that he refinished and passed on to me before he passed away. The knobs are exactly what this masculine dresser needs in my femanine room.
I would use it to buy some new lights for our landscaping since the tornados demolished our old ones.

I actually found a link to Centsationalgirl from the Jones Design Company website a few weeks ago and have been in love with the project gallery ideas ever since. I moved into a new apartment back in January and have since been trying to make it feel like home. We have an enormous patio and I believe that your outdoor space is just as important as your indoor space and both should represent YOU. I’ve added globe lights and some lounge chairs but the one thing that was missing is a table and chairs. I’ve been saving this beat up bistro set in my parents attic for a few years now telling myself that I would fix it up one day… well the time has come. The project gallery DIY on fixing up an outdoor table gave me the push I needed to finally fix up that table. I would use the Lowes gift card on all items needed to fix up my bistro set and a few additions to turn the patio into my oasys.

I would buy a new area rug for my living room as my “other” spilled an ENTIRE BOTTLE OF SWEET CHILI SAUCE all over my beautiful hand woven pottery barn wool rug. Surprisingly I muffled the scream.
We just moved in January and my room is this ugly old white colour. Not pretty white, just plain white. So, I’d like to do something to add colour to the room. Maybe repaint my dresser that I’ve had since I was born! Give it a nice blue and purple combo! And paint the shelves the room came with!

Lemonade stand/outdoor puppet theater! I would love to try some of the high definition paint. I think I would get a fun color or two & some supplies to make a small wood structure that could be a lemonade stand/outdoor puppet theater for my 7 yr old daughter to use this summer. That would be really fun & provide hours of fun & entertainment for years to come! I could make the structure & leave a way to have a removable curtain for the puppet shows! A reversible sign to hang on front would tell what the structure would be used for each time! She would be soooo excited!

Love your web site! And I have a very large, white pantry door in my kitchen. I would love to do the entire door in magnetic and chalkboard paint and trim it out in molding. So fun for me and my kids! But, dang, that magnetic primer and chalkboard paint are not cheap!

Good Morning Centsational Girl~ I get so much enjoyment reading your blog each day. You show all of us how to do a lot with a little! My husband and l are retired and don’t have a lot of extra money to decorate. We have a small cozy home, although short on entertaining areas. What l would do with the Lowe’s gift card would be to paint my attached garage,the walls as well as the floor. It’s important to both of us when our kids and grand kids come to visit there is some set-aside play space. I imagine setting up a ping pong table, possibly another small table for games and puzzles. I’ll be tackling the master bedroom soon. Everything (walls, ceiling, trim) is the same color. There is no bedroom door. There are no window treatments (not even blinds). And the light fixture is super basic and cheap. A second floor bedroom in Austin, TX really needs a ceiling fan.
