Favorite Things

By Kate Riley November 19, 2010

My friend Melissa at 320 Sycamore is having a ‘Favorite Things’ party today ~ here are some of my favorite things from just today!

1.  A latte from Peets to go.  When you’re a volunteer at your kid’s elementary school, you need caffeine!  Lately I’ve been treating myself to a latte on Fridays from my favorite coffee shop.  Love!

2.  Arbonne makeup primer.   A friend introduced me to this a few months ago, and I’m totally hooked.  I’m cheating on my other favorite skin primer because Arbonne makeup primer is less expensive, and therefore quickly taking its place.  No one pays me to say it, I just love it!  Under tinted moisturizer, it makes me feel (and almost look) ten years younger.  I now use it every time I leave my house.

Less visible pores and lines?  Gimme.

3.  Hanging out with my munchkins.  I love exploring the world through their eyes.  I have few memories of my own childhood, don’t know why.  My baby sister can not only remember exactly what she was wearing on March 7, 1983, but also the exact words from her spelling test that week.  Her memory is amazing.  Me?  I can’t even remember the name of my second grade teacher.

I just love being a mom and getting to live vicariously through my children.  They still believe in Santa, the Force, and the Tooth Fairy, so I’m treasuring it as long as it lasts.

4.  Pie Recipes.  I stocked up all all my supplies today for both Praline Pumpkin Pie and also Key Lime Pie ~ so so so excited for the Thanksgiving feast next week!

5.  The wonder of flocking.  Oh yes, I have discovered the fake snow and it is gooooood!  Not so good when you wipe it on your favorite jeans (dagnabit!) but such a fun tool for adding that wintery frosted look.  For all you folks that get snow all winter long, you may think I’m crazy for wanting to add snow to my décor.  But out here in Cali we have to drive for hours up into the mountains to see a winter wonderland, so I’m totally faking the snow this year.

The front door wreath is under construction . . reveal coming soon!

6.  Decorating our home for the holidays.  We busted out the merry tunes last night and the Christmas closet has been opened.  My excuses for decorating before Thanksgiving?  1) I’m not hosting it, 2)  I’m throwing a Christmas party in 30 days, and 3) I just feel like it.

Totally exciting news friends!  For the next week, I’ve lined up so many goodies for you, I can’t wait to get started!  All next week, I’ll be hosting a series of giveaways just in time for your holiday shopping.  There will be something for everyone, including a super duper handy cutting tool that may or may not rhyme with "Hill Duet".

  1. What a fun list! Great tip with the makeup primer… I need to check that out. I can not wait for pie next week… yum! Your front door wreath is looking so pretty! I am lovin’ all the favorites from this party! :)

  2. I WANT THE “HILL DUET.” :) You are on for the chick lit and peppermint mocha anytime, girl! ;) I’d let you borrow my purple ruffled booties, but they are sort of attached to me. ;)

Love the idea for praline pumpkin pie. I want to try that one!! Can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve for Christmas decorating. :)

  3. That pie looks heavenly! I’ve got to get my list together and get shopping for ingredients. Your son is also a real cutie! Have a lovely weekend, Kate.

  4. Pie looks yummy! I’m from Cali (and live in Georgia now) so I totally understand the flocking thing! I miss the fact that you can get your christmas tree flocked out there…not here people would think we were crazy though it only snows once or twice a year! Have fun flocking!

  5. Totally agree on the primer. I’ve been using it for a good while now and LOVE it. Arbonne foundation is pretty nice too :). The pie looks so scrumptious and I agree about caffiene and the elementary school thing. I substitute taught all week and brough my java everyday (and splurged on the cafe version just one day). Happy Thanksgiving!

  6. Great list — I think I need to look into that primer!! And I’m with you on the memory stuff..I’ve got nothing either?!

Have a wonderful week next week!! Happy, happy Thanksgiving, kate! I’m thankful to have ‘met’ you this year. :)

  7. I love snow too! But we’ve gotten quite a bit this week (over a foot) so I’d love to share some with ya!

  8. Hi Kate,
Thanks for the inspiration… I am getting excited to decorate for the holidays too. Mantel ideas are swimming in my head. A wreath for the front door is next in line. The tree? I’m just not there yet. Maybe it is that 5 toddlers and a preschooler run around here all week long! :)

  9. Oh goodness gracious I can’t wait to see that wreath! I love that picture of your little boy in front of the map…they are the BEST favorites. So thrilled that you joined us!

  10. Mmm, that pie photo is giving me a craving! Would love to see a list of your favourite pie recipes!

Also love the blue/silver color scheme of your decorations. So pretty!

  11. I have very few memories of childhood either! I finally decided it is that I focus so much on the present and the future that I just don’t have enough energy (brain power) to devote to the past!

  12. looove your blue and silver bowl!
I just bought my wrapping paper and went a bit non-traditional this year…. pink and green! Yes, a bit different for me. I usually do reds and golds and greens to coordinate with my home’s decor, but what the hay! It will be pink and green under the tree this year at my house!

  13. I love that silver Revere bowl with the silver and blue! That gave me an idea…I have a copper Revere bowl and I shall use it this year to decorate.
Also can’t wait to see your wreath…I have a few old tired ones in the attic that need some snow I think.
Arbonne’s make up primer is ‘the bomb”
    Cheeres!

  14. ooh that pumpkin pie looks delish – since Thanksgiving is long over here, I’ll be patiently waiting for next year so I can try this recipe out!

  15. Can’t wait to see the wreath! I’ve been thinking a lot about them lately and haven’t figured out what to do for our front door! I’m making myself wait to decorate until Friday though… It’s killin me!

  16. Oh, I so relate with the memory thing. LOVE the silver bowl of ornaments. I am hosting turkey day and so my husband is having to physically restrain me from opening our Christmas closet. ahhhhhh! Have a great weekend. Fun list.

  17. Kate, do you know how lucky we are to have Peet’s in CA? I assumed they were everywhere, but when I visited DC I had to drink Starbucks. Can you imagine? Hehe, I know, I’m such a coffee snob ;)

  18. I love the bowl of blue ornaments. The bird just finishes it off.
I never drink coffee because it gives me migraine, but it’s hard to resist Starbucks eggnog latte at this time of year. xx

  19. Love this post!! Could you tell us what flocking you’re using and where to get it? Thanks Kate, you’re awesome.

  20. LOVE LOVE LOVE your bowl of ornaments and am THRILLED that you shared your new primer find. I met an Arbonne rep at a salon last week and just ran out of my usual primer….looks like my face improvement stars are all lining up. ;) Have a FABULOUS Thanksgving. Hugs from Texas, Tara

  21. The wreath is so beautiful I love it! We get snow all year and by the end of winter I am sick of it, but that wreath would make winter all the more beautiful & bearable. And I am so excited for your giveaways!!! I have been DYING for a sihlouette! I can’t wait!

  22. Hmmm, I haven’t jumped on the primer bandwagon yet, but you had me with “look ten years younger”! Love your faves.

PS You and I share a weird trait – I have a horrible childhood memory as well. People tell stories about things I did and I can’t remember them at all!

  23. I loooove primer, but am way to cheap to pay much for it. I discovered that you can use the Monistat gel to powder anti-chafing stuff with a FANTASTIC result. Apparently it has the same ingredients. Strange, but true! And it is only about $4 at Walmart! It really does make me look younger and makes makeup go on (and stay on) beautifully.
