Weekend Reading 8.11.24

By Kate Riley August 11, 2024

Hello friends! It was quiet this week on the blog, thank you for understanding. It felt right to spend the week with my family here in Florida as an end to summer instead of on my laptop. We had a lovely time together, trying new restaurants, taking walks on the beach at sunset, cooking a few meals at home, and lounging around in the afternoons and evenings having great conversations.

I felt so much gratitude for the ability to spend time with my adult children and hear all their perspectives on life and their plans for the near future. I love listening to young people navigate the world, asking questions, discovering their likes and dislikes, they’re funny and insightful and delightful. Yesterday my family returned to California and I’m spending one more week in Florida finishing a few projects I’ve started.

Favorite links from the week:

I like the use of soft brown paint on the kitchen cabinets in this colonial home.

  1. I’m not sure where in Florida you live but I’ve rented in Cape Coral. Any ideas of what to see, do, eat would be much appreciated if in that area.

    • Hi Joanna! I’m not familiar with Cape Coral, we’re in Sarasota which is about an hour north, wish I could be of more help!

  2. You’re in Sarasota, right? I would love to hear about your favorite restaurants. Have you tried Rosemary and Thyme? It’s on Orange Avenue. For a great casual deli sandwich place, I recommend Maximillian’s on 10th Street.

    • I’ve been to Rosemary and Thyme, love it! I’ll try Maximillians this week. (And yes, I’m in Sarasota!)
I like the appetizers at Mattison’s 41 on the Trail (also downtown), Big Water Fish Market on Siesta Key has amazing fish, also Cafe Gabbiano is good Italian close to the water.
Veronica Fish & Oyster on Osprey is good for elegant drinks and appetizers, although a little pricey.
Downtown we love Rose & Ivy for sushi and 1592 for Mediterranean dishes (my personal favorite). Cinco has great happy hour unique tacos!
Kolucan in Gulf Gate has delicious elevated Mexican cuisine. And the best key lime pie is at Freshwater Fish Market, a little hole in the wall place that also serves great fish, it won Best Pie in the state according to Yelp.
I’m still trying places here and there and everywhere I can!
