Warm Spaces with Brown Tones

By Kate Riley September 12, 2023

In a natural response to changing seasons, we welcome darker colors in autumn and winter and opt for lighter colors in spring and summer. Not that fall is here, browner hues seem especially appealing. Earth tones are surging in popularity again, but I find it interesting when we say colors are “out” or “in”, especially ones that are dominant in nature like blues, greens, and browns.

As we all know, in interior design preferential palettes change from year to year. We’re definitely in a warm tones phase and have moved far away from the grays that were so popular ten years ago. If you’re using mid to dark wood tones in your furniture or accent choices, you’re already decorating with brown, one of nature’s most common colors. Below are a few inspiring examples of how to be more purposeful with brown tones.

With Paint

Cabinetry, wall paneling, ceiling and door trim, and walls are all surfaces where an application of chocolate or latte add warmth and sophistication.

With Fabrics

Florals in earth tones, classic plaids and tartans, or rich velvets feel luxurious and cozy in living spaces.

Have you used earth tone patterns or textiles in your home this season, or do you stick with simple wood to add brown to your home?

  1. I love warm tones, some of these browns are gorgeous; however, some are just sooo dark. I would feel suffocated in a few of these rooms. To each his own 😃

  2. I love the brown tones. So earthy and calming. I like how some of the designers mixed the darker tones with lighter in the moldings, fireplace surround or furniture to balance it out. I could curl up on that brown velvet sofa with a good book for hours!

  3. I have gravitated to tans and browns for over 35 years. My bedroom is a dark brown and it’s a sleeper’s heaven. We just painted the house a brown with almost brown-black trim and love it.

  4. Such a high cozy content here! These look like really comfortable spaces to spend time. You’ve got a little typo, Kate, in the first paragraph. I think you meant to say “Now that fall..”, but you said “Not that fall…”

Thanks for the cozy fall feels. <3
