Target Credenza Hack + Furnished Family Room

By Kate Riley December 14, 2022

On my last visit to Florida, I made more changes to the family room. When we bought the house it came with furniture that didn’t suit my style, so I sold the sofas and donated the old media towers to start fresh.

The style I was going for was coastal meets mid century modern. I wanted it to be light and bright, filled with cozy furniture, plants, and art from my travels. My goal was to pull a cozy space together on a budget!

Below are old pictures from the real estate listing, you can see the big leather lounge sofas and dated media center I started with.

I sold the sofas to a local resident for a lounge he had set up for his teenagers. To replace them, I purchased a white leather midcentury style sofa and loveseat from IKEA, sources below.

All the plants are faux since we don’t live in the house full time. I sourced them from Michaels, Target, and Home Goods. When I find a good fake, I buy it!

I was looking everywhere for a long credenza for the TV wall and was undecided for weeks. I contemplated a high end version or IKEA hack but when I came across these woven cane TV stands and I thought I’d just combine two of them to get the look I wanted. The dimensions were perfect, with two they would extend along the entire spans of the wall.

The only complication was that I didn’t want the two black metal bases next to each other because that would look like… two store bought media stands pushed up next to each other. :)

So I came up with an alternative plan. Once I had assembled them, I added mid century style sofa legs to the bases (spray painted white) to give the credenza a few more inches of height and an airy elevated look.

The beach and palm artwork is all from my print shop, all in black and white, see sources below.

Here’s another budget hack! I covered one of the white end tables that came with the house with peel and stick grasscloth wallpaper to give it a coastal look.

When we were entertaining here for Thanksgiving, I switched things up a bit. Here’s a glimpse of the space with just a few festive holiday accents.

In 2023 I’ll make two more changes. We’re replacing the flooring so the carpet will go and in its place luxury vinyl plank throughout the house. I also need to replace the existing vertical blinds with curtains on a track system. Meanwhile, I’m pleased with the cozy furnished space I created on a budget!
