Oreo Truffles: Three Ways

Today really isn’t one of those holidays I get terribly excited for. I do like the idea of showing people extra love, but I prefer spontaneous surprises on ordinary days. The kids enjoy Valentine’s Day so I spend most of my energy making them feel special, however I will accept any  excuse to whip up delicious chocolate treats and this year it was Oreo truffles.

My cousin Stephanie introduced me to these over the Christmas holiday when she brought them to the Christmas Eve gathering. I declared I’d never tasted anything more heavenly and she told me they were Oreo truffles. I had never heard of Oreo truffles before, perhaps I’ve been living under a rock but apparently they’re as All American as Dairy Queen and here I had no idea. But their deliciousness haunted me and I decided to whip up a batch of them, using Valentine’s Day as an excuse to indulge – I also gave them a little something extra with a few ingredients.

The recipe is one of the simplest, have you made them before?  All you need is a bag of Oreo cookies, a package of cream cheese, and some melted chocolate. The recipe can be found here, and to make them you need these:

First grind the entire package of cookies to a powder in a food processer.

Add the package of cream cheese and pulse until you have a soft dough like substance. It’s okay to nibble a bit at this time, you have my full permission.

Melt the chocolate chips or chocolate squares in the microwave on medium heat, stirring every 30-45 seconds. Make little balls and smother them in melted chocolate.

I found it was easier to spoon the melted chocolate over the top instead of rolling the cookie balls directly in the chocolate since they’re prone to crumbling.

And I got a little creative. In one batch, I placed a maraschino cherry in the center, surprise!

In the other two batches I added two other favorite toppings.  First, coconut!  Yes, I’m a lover not a fighter when it comes to coconut and chocolate together.

And a little toffee crunch with some crushed Heath Bar – a match made in heaven.

Refrigerate for an hour and you’ll have some divine treats very difficult to resist!

  1. I made these using the mint creme Oreos once and they were so delicious. I also read you can use Nutter Butters instead of Oreos if you are a peanut butter fan.

  2. I just bought a food processor, this sounds like a good first recipe to use it for! I’m drooling over the pics…

  3. If you roll out the dough into balls, and then put them on a parchment lined cookie sheet into the freezer for about 15-20 minutes, it makes it much easier to coat them in the chocolate. I’ll also pop them back in the freezer when they’re all coated to get them to set faster. I like to enjoy these as fast as possible :)

  4. For an adult version, you could add some bourbon, or dessert liquor like Kahlua. At Christmas I do a truffle with crushed vanilla wafers, cocoa powder, walnuts, corn syrup, bourbon, prepared the same as above in a food processor, then rolled in powdered sugar or dipped in chocolate. Delish!! Can’t wait to try the Oreo Truffles.

  5. I have found that chilling the “dough” before making into balls makes it less messy. I use a cookie dough scoop and scoop out all the balls and then roll so I’m not getting the handle all goop-y. Then I stick a toothpick in each and freeze them before dipping in chocolate.

    And I second Michelle- the cookie dough truffles are fantastic! These two recipes get my vote any day over cake balls!

  7. yes Valenties Day is a silly holiday. If you love someone why do you need a day to tell you that. Anyhow, I have made these befor and if you chill the balled oreos mixtur before dipping in chocolate then rechill again they don’t fall apart as much.

  8. a friend of mine uses white chocolate, so it literally looks and tastes like an inside out oreo.

  9. I was introduced to these by a friend who is dairy-allergic. They come out great with the fake cream cheese stuff!
    Those cookie dough balls sound dangerous… I must try!

  10. I tried these and found spooning the chocolate over was much easier as well. I had gotten the receipe from a co-worker and left it at work so I did it from memory. When I looked at the recipe at work the next day, it said to freeze the dough for a while, I think an hour, which of course would make the deliciousness easier to roll in the chocolate. The original receipt doesn’t call for freezing, but I’m sure it would make it so much easier. I am having a home jewelry party next week and had already thought to make these as they were such a big hit!!!

  12. If you form the dough balls and then freeze for an hour or so before dipping in chocolate they won’t crumble and they set up quicker

  13. Hmmmm, I tried these at Christmas and it was a disaster. They wouldn’t set up at all and began to “melt” into a mess within minutes. I’ll have to try again using your method!

    LOVE Valentine’s Day – maybe because it’s my birthday! And any time you can have your mind refocused onto the idea of LOVE rather than the chaos of everyday life, I’m all for it! :)

  14. Looks wonderful !! Do you scrape off the frosting before using the food processor? The crushed cookies looked dark, did not see the frosting. Thanks !!

  15. Oh my goodness….my son made these in his Facts class this week and can’t stop talking about how good amazingly good they are. I’m getting the ingredients tomorrow for him to us dessert. I can’t wait to taste test them.
