Peace Be With You

By Kate Riley November 29, 2010

Greetings friends, happy Monday!  So much preparation for the holidays going on this week, ’tis the season for crafting too!   I like to add a few items to our holiday decor every year, both store bought and handmade.  Over the weekend, I made two of these ‘Peace’ dove ornaments.

Here’s the simple way I created it:

I found a dove illustration on the internet, then snagged the image and copied it on plywood, cutting it out with my jig saw.  You can make anything with a jig saw and some leftover plywood!  Letters, shapes, any kind of image you like!   If you don’t have a jig saw, consider it for a gift from Santa to you!  You’ll love what it can do.

Once cut, I sanded the edges, then filled in those rough edges with wood filler.  I spray primed it gray.  With my Silhouette, I designed the text and cut out some white vinyl letters.

Are you considering a Silhouette craft cutter for your Christmas gift?   I know, I’ve been talking so much about it, but it has become addicting!!!  Today only you get a $100 discount off a Silhouette craft cutter with the code CENTSATIONAL !

Regularly $299, today only it is $199 !!!

OK, back to the bird.

Once I attached the word with vinyl, I gave it two coats of white paint.

I attached a screw eye and some charming trim, easy peasy!

  So sweet, I love it!

Like I said, I made two of them.

I plan to keep one, but I’m giving the other one away!

Would you like to have it?

If so, simply leave a comment before the end of the day on Thursday.  I’ll pick one winner at random.  My dove is not absolutely perfect, but that’s the beauty of handmade, right?  I’m happy to mail one to the winner just in time to hang on your tree!

  1. I’d love to have the other dove! I just finished law school and finally have a “big girl” apartment of my very own. I want to start a tradition of adding something new to the tree every year and this lovely dovey would be a great way to kick-start that tradition. Great job!

  2. I’ll finally have my own Christmas tree up this year (we didn’t have our holiday decorations while living abroad in Scotland the season before), so I’m looking forward to continuing our tradition of adding a special ornament to the collection. It’s a great way for my husband and I to remember the year by. “Peace” is what we’re most enjoying at the moment!

  3. What a beautiful ornament. Its a great reminder that God grants us a spirit of peace…I need to remember that “especially” this week as my husband goes for a biopsy on Wed.

  4. I’d love to add one of these beautiful doves to our tree this year– it’s our first married Christmas and we’re decorating our tree from scratch. Great work!

  5. I have always yearned for a jigsaw! I love your little dove – the most perfect symbol of the season. You’re so creative, Kate!

  6. So cute! I’d love one of those machines, my husband and I are already thinking of the cute onesies we could make.

  7. Peace be also with you!! Lovely stuff and great tutorial.Must get a saw like that from Santa :-)
I am baking my Xmas decorations this year, check it out if you want on my blog.
A very happy first Advent to you

  8. What a pretty dove and I would love to have something handmade by you. It would look lovely on my tree. I’m doing one tree with whites, grays and neutrals with tiny white lights. That’s beautiful ribbon you used!

  9. I would LOVE to add your little dove to my collection of ornaments :). Also, I’m praying for PEACE this Holiday season amidst some messy family turmoil. Thanks! GG

  10. I actually talked my Dad into letting me ‘borrow’ his jigsaw, he never uses it. Now, I can’t wait to get crafting!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. Don’t need a contest entry — I just bought one for myself. Thanks for the savings code! That was a lot of money off the price. Thanks so much. :)

  12. I LOVE handmade ornaments and try to add some to my own tree each year too. I would love to add yours to my tree this year. :) Thanks for the chance to win it.

  13. I would LOVE to win the other Dove!!! Handmade is the very best Christmas ornament of all!
    Thanks. Crossing. Fingers. Now!!!!

  14. Love this ornament!!! Hope I win:) I’m not brave enough…yet…to handle anything with the word “saw” in it.

  15. so cute. My ornaments are sparse as my husband and I “gift” eachother one each year (and have only been married 2 years) – this little guy would make our tree look a little fuller this year! :)

  16. I love it! The dove is precious. I agree about the jigsaw! I often joke that the one of the biggest disagreements that Mr. AK and I had was when I came home from shopping with a jigsaw instead of a dress! I would rather new tools than new clothes. (He bought me a dress the next day – such a sweetie…I often wear it to jigsaw).

  17. This dove is so precious! And thank you for the chance to win! So many Holiday sentiments could be written on them…

  18. Peacefully creative! I too love my skilsaw and if I don’t win your ornament, I will certainly create something similiar (hope).

  19. I’ve loved the story of two turtle dove’s ever since I saw Home Alone 2….you keep one and give the other to a friend, as long as you each have your turtle dove, you’ll stay friends forever….love that story!

  20. You are so darn crafty! Your blog is a source of constant inspiration – both just new ideas and new craft things to try altogether. Keep up the good work!

  21. Those are so cute, I love them. That would be a great addition to my Christmas tree.

  22. I love your dove, I hope I win, peace dove’s have been my holiday signature for 30 years.

  23. The more and more I read your blog, I am trying to be more creative and confident enough to do things on my own. In the ornament department, I need all the help I can get! I have to start from scratch this year. All of my family’s xmas decorations and ornaments were lost in a flood in May of this year, so I’m on the lookout for any good deals, and DIY ideas I think I can tackle. I’ll also be hitting up all the awesome after Christmas sales!

  24. What a sweet idea. I just need the jigsaw and that silholette thing :). Well I could write it out and maybe use some cardstock….you got the creativity juices flowing. Thanks for the ideas. and as far as the “perfect” part…only God makes perfect :).

  25. Hi Kate, your dove ornament is precious! I am embarrassed to say that I bought a silhouette a few months ago and haven’t take time to really learned how to do all of the things it will do. Hopefully after Christmas I can sit down play with it. How sweet you are to share a homemade ornament.

  26. I love your website! You are really ans inspiration to me…..my craft “stash” gets bigger and bigger so I need to get going! the doves are wonderful…thanks!!~GG Jan~

  27. Just lovely! If I win I will use it for inspiration to pass the peace on….my jigsaw is handy and waiting for word that I’ve won!!! :)

  28. LOve, love, love the dove ornament! You are so clever. I always look forward to seeing your terrific ideas in my email inbox. Also love the use of the glass ornaments on your mantle and going to incoporate your concepts into my holiday decor this year. Thanks Centsational Girl!

  29. Hmm.. I may have to “borrow”my hubby’s jigsaw this weekend! Adorable ornament -I would love to have one!

  30. In a word…LOVELY! Plus, who couldn’t use a little Peace in their lives right now?! Loving your website too!

  31. I LOVE these! :) I already finished our Christmas shopping this year, but these would make wonderful gift tags for a personalized touch!

  32. LOVE! One is delightful. A whole flock in white on a tree with white lights and silver accents would be stunning as well! You could even personalize with each family member’s name and watch it grow over the years. I bet folks would enjoy finding where theirs is on the tree as they await Christmas dinner. Thanks again for yet another inspiring post!
