Virtually Wandering the World

By Kate Riley May 5, 2020

Remember when we used to take airplanes to far away places and stand next to hundreds of strangers all looking at famous sights? I miss that, and I bet you do too. My favorite thing is exploring a new city or country but like so many I’m unable to do it anytime soon. I’ve got my fingers crossed I can go somewhere on my travel bucket list in the fall.

I never thought I’d write a post about taking virtual tours of places around the world, but come to think of it, even without a pandemic, it’s fun to explore places we’ve never been. How amazing that we live in a time when we can appreciate the creative works of other travelers and enjoy their walking or aerial videos of all the fascinating places on earth.

I found these virtual tours on You Tube, none of them are narrated so they’re not like travel shows that have the distraction of a host. These virtual tours are walking, cycling, boating, or aerial shots of places around the world, many set to relaxing music. They all feel so special. These won’t curb your wanderlust, if anything they may stimulate your desire to go to these places, at least that’s the effect they had on me. These only scratch the surface of virtual tours that exist, I’ll have to round up more in a follow up post.

Click on the links above the images and they will take you directly to the You Tube videos where you can view a relaxing virtual tour of that part of the world.

Walk the cities and streets of Morocco including Marrakech and Chefchouen.

Get up close with locals of Peru and go inside Machu Picchu.

Enjoy a slow aerial view of Japan including Tokyo and Kyoto.

Stroll along the streets and canals of Venice in Italy.

Fly over the scenic Northern Islands (Faroe, Lofoten & Senja)

Have you ever been inside the arena of the Colosseum in Rome?

Hear the ocean on this beach walk along the path in Wailea, Maui.

Take a jog down the famous path in Venice Beach past the Santa Monica Pier..

Climb up through the Alps and fly over scenes of Switzerland.

Take a quiet walk around the Great Pyramid of Giza.

Tour the charming towns of the Cinque Terre by land and sea.

Remember crowds of people? They appear in this walk inside the British Museum.

Want to see the exterior of the Taj Mahal up close? Take a walk around it.

Go on virtual safari to see African wildlife in Kruger National Park.

Explore the landscape and culture of Bali and its surrounding islands.

Fly over the Scotlish Highlands and the Isle of Skye while listening to healing music.

See the natural lakes and waterfalls on the South Island of New Zealand.

Take a nature hike through Redwood National Park set to zen music.

If you miss airplanes, how about a meditative orbit around our beautiful earth.

The list goes on and on my friends, I had to stop somewhere! While watching these videos I let out a big sigh because I wish to explore all the places I haven’t been yet, but these are the next best thing!

I hope you enjoy these virtual tours as much as I do.

  1. Hi Kate,
for the preservation of the earth and the beautiful places shown here, it would certainly be a good idea not to visit these unique beauties also after Corona.
If we continue to fly and leave our footprints everywhere, reduce the habitat of wild animals, the next state of emergency will soon be in effect.
Think about it, best regards Tina

    • It’s such an interesting topic Tina! We are watching the world heal from our lack of movement! Wildlife is thriving, air pollution is down. It makes me so happy to see the world in a state of recovery while we all sit still. The earth doesn’t need us.

Before the pandemic, it was difficult for me watching travel “influencers” promoting extraneous travel to the extent that the globe became a commodity instead of something to be respected and preserved. I wrote an “Afternoon Chat” post about that last year. https://centsationalstyle.com/2019/08/afternoon-chat-instagrammers-overtourism/ I believe the experience of this virus will *hopefully* curb the serious problem of overtourism.

However, I am not one that believes a virus that circulated the globe is a reason to sit still forever. One should not be forced to forever refrain from traveling to places of interest after Corona. Traveling to other parts of the world is inspiring and eye opening. We can continue to enjoy the beauty of this beautiful earth as we travel in a conscious way. Thank you for bringing up this topic. :)

  2. These are so lovely. I’ve never watched videos like this before. Thank you for compiling and sharing!

    • You’re welcome, I loved them all, even just the simple silent walks!

  3. So many beautiful places to see! We had to cancel my 50th birthday trip back in March. I’m itching to get back out there too!

  4. These are wonderful! Thank you. Makes me appreciate all that God created even more.
