I’m back from my whirlwind trip to Australia! Wow, what a fun time I had! It took me a full day to acclimate, reconnect with my family, and feel mostly normal, it’s quite a long journey. Today I’m back to work!
Have you noticed the growing popularity of wall murals? They’re showing up everywhere in room reveals, they’re definitely trending and arguably the cooler version of the painted accent wall that was so popular in the 2000s.
Creating a scene that spans the length and height of a full wall is nothing new, in fact it’s one of the most old school installations in design. Think of the painted frescos from centuries ago, intricate mosaic scenes in ancient cities, and wall murals that towns use to capture and display their history.
Paint and wallpaper are the most commonly used backdrops in interior design, but a wall mural does something different. It tells a story and sets the tone of a space. Murals can be serene, playful, exotic, or even visually transport the viewer to a different time. Of course one can always hire a local artist to make one’s vision come to life, or you can turn to any number of preprinted wall murals. These are a few of my favorites.

I’m a fan. I have 2 wall murals from Surface View that I installed about 9 years ago. Their quality is top notch and the options are unlimited. I’m amazed how many more vendors are offering them today.

I’m a huge fan. Anthropologie has a great selection. I have the Jurdarn mural, just need the husband to help put it up!
I love wall murals. I put a very colourful one in my kitchen five years ago. We ended up selling the home but it was a huge hit with new owners as well. Our new place has so many windows, I’m not sure I can do it again :-(
I loooove this trend. I always loved the painted murals in colonial era fancy southern homes, and I so want to find a way to apply one in my own home. We did a dark moody accent wall in my girls’ bedroom due to budget constraints, but I fantasized about an Anthro mural and could see putting one in down the road. Also my hallway is a good candidate – something that would work above 1/3 wainscoting is what I have in mind. Not too busy/high contrast but a grisaille cloudscape or similar… ahhhh! Can’t wait :)

That first one isn’t cherry blossoms, it’s a reproduction of Van Gogh’s “Almond Blossom” painting, although it appears to be reversed left-to-right.
It is in the public domain, of course, but I am disappointed that the company doesn’t give credit to Van Gogh.

I am a fan of wall murals if they are done well. But the 1st and 3rd ones here are just too much noise in front of the mural. It detracts. I remember back in the 70’s we would do something similar – wall graphics- when we moved into our first under furnished apartment or our first under furnished house! They created decor and made everything work. Not that that is the only purpose of the murals today. Just my musing and memories.
I put the peel and stick wallpaper of birch trees on my large closet doors. I love it.
I’m head over hills for wall murals! They add so much personality and character to any room you place them in. As you’ve said, there’s always some story to tell behind them and they’re great for expressing one’s attitude and style in the best possible way.
