Dino & Heidi’s Kitchen Remodel

By Kate Riley May 18, 2016

Hi everyone! Over the weekend I popped in to visit some good friends, Dino and Heidi. Their son and my son are really good friends so we hang out often. Dino and Heidi had been considering a kitchen remodel for years and they finally went ahead and did it! I snapped a few photos of their new space on my most recent visit to their home and I think you’ll agree the remodel is really beautiful!

Here’s a peek at the space they lived with for a few years after they bought the house. They felt the cabinets were dark and bulky and the granite countertops were not their taste. The couple researched for months what they wanted for this space, they even considered hiring an architect to move walls, but in the end decided to save money by maintaining the old footprint and upgrading the space with new cabinets, tile, and appliances.

Instead of a cooktop and double ovens, Heidi and Dino opted for a range instead and repurposed their Thermador hood. This range is really beautiful in person, it’s a Bertazzoni 36” professional gas range. Dino loves to cook so this is his favorite feature for sure!

Here’s a closer look at the beveled tile backsplash (the tile was purchased locally). Instead of a traditional offset, Heidi liked the idea of stack bond or horizontal grid, it feels very fresh and modern. The grout lines were kept to a minimum and the grout used is a pale gray to complement the Bianco Carrara marble countertop. The single basin sink is Silgranite Blanco Precis and one of their favorite new features, don’t you love that dark color? Beautiful! The faucet is Blanco Meridian Semi Professional in polished chrome.

Heidi loved the idea of wood floating shelves instead of upper cabinets, the warm wood finish ties in with the floor and and is such a nice contrast against all the white finishes. I asked Heidi how she feels about living with open shelves and she loves them! She’s very organized so she loves that her favorite dishes are out in the open. Not shown are the mini puck lights hidden under the bottom shelf for task or mood lighting in this kitchen.

I love this black Aurora pendant above the sink, it’s unexpected and such a beautiful contemporary shape.

Another touch of black is found in these Top Knobs Noveau III pulls and knobs in matte black. I love the clean lines of the Shaker style drawer fronts and the rectangular black pulls against the white!

The cabinets are Dayton by Cliq Studios, the same used in this kitchen remodel last year. The countertop is marble chosen from a local slab yard, always classic!

The cabinets feature many amenities inside, including drawer dividers, turntable shelves in the corners, and a pull out spice drawer too.

The double ovens that were rarely used were removed and replaced with a pantry that was lacking before. Heidi kept the same simple black counter stools, another clever touch of black in this mostly white kitchen.

Overall the space feels bright and modern and most importantly fits Dino and Heidi’s lifestyle and personal tastes.

  1. Can you share the source for the open shelves and how the lights are affixed to the bottoms? I’d like to do the same, but can’t figure out how to make it so you don’t see the lights.

  2. Looks great. Good use of drawers in bottom cabinets. Brilliant idea positioning the faucet handle I the center! Eliminates the left hand right hand dilemma.

  3. Luv the black and white combinations…just a beautiful re-do!! franki

  4. Perfection!!! My kitchen looks a lot like the ‘before’ and I keep pinning kitchens that are closer to Heidi and Dino’s ‘after’! #covetmuch I love all the details like the matte black sink with the matte black pulls, the beveled edge on the tile… Absolutely gorgeous! <3

  5. Oh those floors are dreamy!! What is the stain color and finish, please??

  6. Hi Hilary, we are putting in floating shelves as we speak. You can have a groove made in the shelf and insert LED tape – it’s what a lot of electricians here are using in kitchens now. Hope that helps!

  7. Like kiminthecove above, the kitchen in my last house looked almost exactly like Dino and Heidi’s. Instead of remodeling, we moved but I always wanted to change the all oak look to white cabinets with black accents. Love the subway tiles. Their kitchen is similar in size too — the open area in the middle wasn’t quite large enough for a full island, so we used a large moveable kitchen island that was narrower. I love the look of the Bertazzoni Bros range, but you should warn them that the cook top/range is great but the oven bakes/roasts really unevenly. Our new house came with a Bertazzoni Bros range. At first I thought I just needed to get used to a gas oven because I had electric ovens before. But no matter what I did, the bottom of whatever I baked/roasted was darker than the top. I wound up having to place two disposable aluminum foil trays on the bottom rack to deflect the open flames which come out of two holes located at either side of the bottom of the oven, Even with the convection fan, this burning still happens. The aluminum foil tray fix effectively reduces the oven to a one rack oven, but then things didn’t burn before they were fully cooked on top. FYI

  8. Thank you for sharing this remodel! The finished kitchen is
beyond gorgeous, and the addition of black elevates the overall design. It’s appreciated that you used the same angle in the before and after images. It’s very easy to see the differences overall, and in specific areas.

  9. This is a beautiful kitchen! I love the open shelves and the gorgeous wood stain. We just finished our kitchen remodel too. Check it out on my blog.

  10. It was a pretty kitchen to begin with but it looks AMAZING now! Love all of it!

  11. Would you be able to provide the open shelf source information please? Thank you!
