Blue + White Sunroom

By Kate Riley July 15, 2015

*This post in partnership with Smith & Noble window treatments.

This is my most favorite room in the Las Vegas house because of its abundant natural light, high sloped ceiling, and arched entry. This space was originally designed as a formal dining room but currently I am using as a more casual sitting room or sunroom.

I have future plans to add built ins on the far wall and swap the table for a larger desk so that it can function as a home office for future tenants/renters, but today it’s lovely just as it is, filled with a few thrift store finds, some accessories, and beautiful new window treatments from Smith & Noble.

This room sat empty for the longest time, acting as a storage space but I decided it was time to make it a more welcoming place to sit and relax with morning coffee or afternoon tea and a stack of magazines or a laptop.

Here is a reminder of what the space was like when we bought the house, since then we’ve changed the flooring to tile and freshened with paint and swapped out the light fixture. I think you’ll agree the window treatments are much improved!

I’ve partnered with Smith & Noble before because their window treatments are such high quality (their plantation shutters are so well made, I’ve also featured their unique wave fold drapery for a sliding door.)

Today is a third feature and one of my favorite kinds of window treatments, the layered woven shade + decorative panel combo which works in just about any space you can imagine from bedrooms to dining rooms.

These casual hidden tab drapes were custom made in the Encounter Sky fabric and hang on wrought iron hardware. You can also order fabric by the yard from Smith & Noble and make your own. Be sure to take advantage of their free samples for all window treatments!

The jute woven shades are waterfall style in the Ananda Mist color, unlined to allow light to filter into the space since privacy is not an issue. The combination of both fabric panels and woven shades adds beautiful pattern and texture to the space!

Just like with the wave fold drapery, I sent Smith & Noble a diagram of the windows and ideal measurements, but a simple hand drawn sketch will do or you can have one of their team members come to your home to measure and/or install.

The table and chairs are both thrift store finds, the table was a honey colored wood but I painted it white following the same steps as this post on painting a kitchen table. It’s a four step process of sanding, then priming, then painting, and adding a protective coat of clear wax.

The sunroom has a tropical style with its ocean inspired palette, mix of textures, and leafy botanicals.

Two of the white vases and the trio of blue baskets on the wall are from West Elm as is the little faceted box, the tray is from Pottery Barn, the brass fish is vintage from Etsy. The rattan pendant is from Joss & Main, so is the curved metal leg table, both purchased last year. The rug is from Overstock, available here.

  1. Gorgeous! I get their catalogs in the mail and always love their products. Your fabric and jute combo is perfection!

  2. Beautiful! This whole home is coming together in such a calming and classy style. I hope you plan on doing a full tour eventually (waiting for more kitchen pics ;). Are you willing to share your contractor’s name? Our best friends are undertaking a similar project in Las Vegas. Thank you so much!!

    • Email me Lisa I have a few really great subcontractors we’ve worked with !

  3. Lovely room, for sure! Unfortunately, way out of my budget- just for the heck of it I priced out the very same blind you chose, Ananda Mist(lined for privacy), for my master bedroom. I would need 2- 25 1/2 wide X 60 inches long- $427.00 each. I would also need 2 for my master bath, same size. At that point I did not price out the 2 on one headrail for my slider that is 84 inches wide. I am sure they are beautiful and nicely made, but for me the custom cut wood blinds at Lowes will have to do and they will ALL be way less than the total of ONE blind from Smith & Noble. Even with the chance to win a $1000. gift card this is way too much for me. Anyone can decorate a beautiful room with an unlimited budget; it takes a lot more work to pull it off within a reasonable budget and an occasional splurge just to feel luxurious. Love your blog and lobe your style but perhaps you can show us some alternatives that are more budget friendly?

  4. I so agree with Joanne B. I’ve said it before. So miss the Cents in Centsational Girl. Blog is changing so much.

  5. Hi! I’m in love with your blog. You are so talented!! I always get excited when I see another another post. I love the rug but the link to overstocked is not working. Can you let me know the names of the area rug.

Many thinks and looking forward to more of your design work.

    Evelyn

  6. Is it just me, or does the link for the rug lead back to the same post as the pendant lighting? Tried to look on Overstock, but that is a veritable maze of blue rugs! I tried to filter, but is it abstract? Geometric? Striped? Ahhhh….I just decided to come back here and ask! (The room is beautiful by the way!)

  7. I love the look. I’m going with the same colors in my living room. The plants you’ve chosen are beautiful. Please share what they are. They’d look great in my dining room. Especially the tall one by the window. I always get great ideas from your blog. Thank you for helping me develop my decor style.

  8. Rebecca, the link for the rug does take you to an old post about lighting. I could not find the rug on Overstock either. I would also like to know what the rug is. The colors are very pretty in the room.

  9. It’s me again, I love the rug. Any possibility we could get the name of the rug. I went on overstock and I couldn’t find :(

    Thank you again,

    Evelyn

    • Sorry about that Evelyn, I updated the link it was incorrect, it now takes you to the rug at Overstock, avail at a great price too, less than $100 !

  10. Love the brightness and color. I do think the pretty light fixture looks a little large for the space, but maybe its just the angle of the picture.

  11. Love the room! Could you repost the rug link? It still doesn’t seem to work for me.

    Thanks!

  12. Just wondering why you keep furnishing the house if your aunt is going to rent it. Does she not have her own furnishings?

    • Her furnishings are in storage while she looks for a house Angela, we plan to rent it out as a furnished or vacation rental in the future.

  13. I’ve been obsessed with those chairs since you first showed them in the entryway. Everything else in the room is great, but they set the tone for the whole space. Please keep them “as is”. This is such an amazing transformation.
Thanks for the chance at the give-away.

  14. I love it all put together, but I’m especially crushing on the rug! I’d love to hear how renting goes since we’re thinking about buying a beach condo here in TX and renting it out as a income property. We’re nervous to do it but we think that it could be a risk that pays off in the long run. Have you rented other properties or will this be your first??

    • Hi Katy, yes Matt and I have owned several rental properties over the years, not a vacation rental yet, but we’ve had tenants before, there are a lot of challenges that come with it, I will have to write up a post about that subject soon!
